The Kodestars Arcade at Geekend was a huge success and we are still reeling from all of the positive feedback and interest we are receiving from others that want to create and host their own arcades. Geekend is an annual interactive conference in Savannah that hosted an arcade to showcase video games built by 4th-8th grade students in the communityt. The Geekend organizers created a branded online arcade on the KODESTARS website and then set up a physical arcade at the conference center with two rooms full of computers – all of which were opened to the online arcade. Over 200 people (kids and adults) came from the conference and community to play the video games that were created by students in 4th-8th grade. Several of the kids who had built video games brought their families to the event and it was inspiring to see the pride on their parents’ faces at what their kids had created.
The energy level was high and everyone raved about how much fun they had playing the games. The event also offered computers where attendees could play around with Scratch, one of the tools that students used to create the video games and a Design room for smaller kids to draw their own website or mobile app design.
Techsmith donated over $1000 of prizes for the winners and participants, including 4 copies of Camtasia video editing software, t-shirts, yoyos and more. All of the attendees had the opportunity to vote for their favourite games and the winners were presented their prizes at the end of the 2 hour event.
Here are a few of these press mentions of the Arcade.
