Creator of Bugs 'N Boo Hags

Brian Canada, PhD, is a tenured Associate Professor of Computational Science at the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB). A chemical engineer, graphic/web designer, computational biologist, and indie game developer, Canada has authored many scholarly papers, software applications, and presentations ranging in scope from his early work with automated biomedical image recognition to a Lowcountry folklore-inspired video game, Bugs ‘N Boo Hags, as well as a forthcoming book chapter on crustacean biodiversity, co-authored with faculty from the USCB Biology program. Dr. Canada’s scholarly and creative products, as well as works developed by his students, have been presented at venues including the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), the ACM Conference on Image and Video Retrieval (CIVR), PAX SOUTH, the Beaufort International Film Festival, the South Carolina Conference on Innovations in Teaching and Learning (SCCITL), as well as the Santa Elena History Center. He is also the faculty advisor and founder of the USCB Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), where he supervises several student-driven digital cultural heritage projects related to the South Carolina Lowcountry, and he also serves as USCB’s resident liaison to the Beaufort Digital Corridor, an extension of the Charleston Digital Corridor. For his efforts in the classroom as well as in service to the community, Dr. Canada was recently recognized as USCB’s Professor of the Year for the 2016-17 academic year.
